There are many tools on the Internet that provide a free analysis of your website. One tool that has been buzzing around lately is from the folks at www.grader.com. The company has a series of free tools to evaluate your website as well as some other web assets like your Facebook page.
To grade your site, go to:
http://website.grader.com and type in your domain and in under a minute, you have a score of 1-100. Now before you go nuts with the "number" you should know that this is just one company's view of what matters with your website. The site looks at a few elements that include programming, hosting configuration, SEO compliance, links and social networking.
I like the report because it quickly identifies some major problems if they exist. There are some other tools out there that also provide good information. We can discuss additional tools based on reader suggestions. If you use a free analysis tool, tell us.
Report Data Highlights
There are a few things that may be misleading in the report. First, if you have many photos on your home page, it gives you a warning. This seems a bit "old school" to me when web page loading times were impacted by photos which does not apply to my website.
Also it notifies you if you are not in the DMOZ, Yahoo or ZoomInfo directories. Each of these directories have their importance but getting in these directories is not simple. DMOZ is free and you are never guaranteed that you will get in once you are submitted. All PCG clients are submitted.
The Yahoo Directory is very powerful for Yahoo searches but it costs $299 a year. The Zoominfo directory, for whatever reason, is not taking direct submissions at this time.
The comments about Digg, Delicious and Technorati are very important. It rates how well you are using social bookmarking services for your blog.
